Being a huge fan of &#39;70s American cinema, I mean thata compliment. Having already written screenplays for John Huston and Sam Peckinpah (whose influence creeps through here and is wildly evident in The Long Riders), Hill largely and deliberately ditches substance for style. The characters are kept pretty thin – the antihero, the obsessed cop, the girl in the middle – and the plot does little more than justify the chases and shootouts. Many people felt that this detracted from the movie, but surely that would be to miss the point of a film which, after all, is called The Driver.<br/><br/>Ryan O&#39;Neal is surprisingly dark and aloof in the title role. His dialogue is wisely kept to a minimum, keeping the charactermysterious and unpredictablea great anti-hero should be. Bruce Dern chews the scenerythe maniacal cop out to snare the driver, while Isabelle Adjani (in what was only her second English language film, after Polanski&#39;s The Tenant), does her best to look indomitable,welllooking absurdly hot.<br/><br/>The rest of the movie is owned by the cars. The chase sequences are intense and briskly paced and the tone of the film is suitably cool and detached – none of the characters even have names. Okay, so we never get to know the driver and are offered nothing to which we can relate but he&#39;s a total badass and can drive like nobody&#39;s business. Surely that&#39;s why we&#39;re watching. Ryan O&#39;Neal plays &quot;The Driver&quot;, Bruce Dern plays &quot;The Detective&quot;, and Isabelle Adjani plays &quot;The Player&quot; in director Walter Hills&#39;s stylish but generic(by design?) and forgettable chase film,the driver is a paid expert getaway driver, who has been involved in a series of robberies that get the attention of the detective, who becomes obsessed with catching O&#39;Neal, no matter the cost, though exactly why is anyone&#39;s guess, which can also be said for the driver himself, since there is no real character development, just car chases and preparing for car chases. Notbadit may sound, but what exactly is the point of it all? Who Knows?
